<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the picturesque countryside of Ireland lies <a href="https://www.thevillage.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cloughjordan Ecovillage</a>, a pioneering community established to champion <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_living" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sustainable living</a>. However, as with any ambitious initiative, this <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecovillage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eco-village</a> encountered complex challenges that threatened its survival during an economic crisis. Remarkably, it was the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viable_system_model" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Viable System Model (VSM)</a>, devised by renowned cybernetician <em>Stafford Beer</em>, that played a pivotal role in navigating the crisis and rejuvenating the community. This article examines how the VSM supported Cloughjordan Ecovillage through its challenges, highlights its role in fostering self-organization, and considers its broader use in complex systems and environments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ireland’s Eco Village, officially known as <em>The Village</em>, is a sustainable community project situated in Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, Ireland. It was conceived in 1999 as a model for eco-friendly living. In 2002, Cloughjordan was identified as a potential site for the project, and planning commenced in 2003-2004. By 2005, a 67-acre (270,000 m²) tract of farmland was purchased to bring the vision to life. Infrastructure development began in 2006 and was completed by 2008. The first residents moved into their eco-friendly homes in December 2009.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Viable System Model</strong>, developed by Stafford Beer in the 1970s, is a theoretical framework designed to help organizations maintain viability — their ability to adapt and sustain themselves in changing environments. At its core, the VSM views any viable system as comprising five interrelated subsystems. The diagram below provides a detailed visualization of the interactions between various subsystems and their roles in achieving systemic viability.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>System 1: Operations (Value Production)</strong><br>These are the operational units responsible for producing value for customers, as represented in the &#8220;Local Management&#8221; loops. Each unit operates semi-autonomously to address specific local demands while adhering to broader systemic goals.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>System 2: Coordination</strong><br>This layer ensures harmonious interactions between operational units by managing conflicts, smoothing out oscillations, and ensuring efficient resource utilization. It facilitates synchronization, such as production planning and inter-departmental communication.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>System 3: Optimization and Control</strong><br>This subsystem optimizes operations by conducting periodic audits (referred to as &#8220;Three Star&#8221;) and leveraging internal synergies. It identifies anomalies and enhances learning potential within the system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>System 4: Adaptation and Strategic Development</strong><br>Positioned at the interface of the organization and its environment, this system anticipates future challenges and explores potential opportunities. It handles scenario development, innovation, and hypothesis-driven strategies to ensure long-term relevance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>System 5: Ethos and Identity</strong><br>The highest level encapsulates the organization’s identity, norms, and guiding values. This level provides an overarching framework for decision-making and ensures alignment with the organization’s purpose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Applying the VSM</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2007, researchers collaborated with the Cloughjordan community to apply the VSM as part of an action research project. Workshops and coaching sessions were conducted to teach members the core principles of the VSM, which they used to restructure their organization.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Key Interventions</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The village streamlined its <strong>operations (System 1)</strong> by identifying and prioritizing core activities such as renewable energy production, organic farming, and community workshops. This focus eliminated unnecessary expenditures and ensured that the essential functions of the community thrived.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To enhance <strong>coordination (System 2)</strong>, regular meetings were introduced alongside transparent communication practices. The adoption of digital tools allowed members to monitor resource usage and manage shared spaces more efficiently, fostering harmony across various activities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the control front, <strong>System 3</strong> mechanisms were strengthened by establishing a financial committee. This group meticulously tracked expenses, ensuring that funds were wisely allocated to reduce debts and optimize the use of resources.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it came to adapting to the external environment, the village leveraged <strong>System 4</strong> by hosting workshops that educated members on market trends and potential funding opportunities. These efforts led to securing grants from environmental organizations, the Irish government and European Union, which were vital in supporting their eco-friendly initiatives.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, the Eco Village revisited its overarching <strong>policy and vision (System 5)</strong>. A renewed emphasis on sustainability and community well-being was integrated into all decision-making processes, reinforcing the shared commitment of its members and solidifying their long-term purpose.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By adopting these systemic changes, the VSM enabled Cloughjordan Ecovillage to weather economic challenges and emerge as a resilient, cohesive community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lessons Learned from the Research</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The intervention provided valuable insights into self-organization in grassroots communities. The <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0377221712006790" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research paper</a> highlights how the VSM acted as a “<strong>meta-language</strong>” that guided the community&#8217;s transformation. By asking critical questions about their structure and processes, members learned to self-regulate and address challenges effectively.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One notable aspect was the community’s rejection of hierarchical models, instead fostering autonomy and participation. The action research approach also allowed the researchers to study the dynamics of self-organization, using tools like social network analysis and longitudinal studies to assess the impact of the VSM.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The results showed that the VSM not only improved the community’s organizational structure but also strengthened its resilience, ensuring its survival during a period of economic crisis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Use of VSM Across Sectors</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Viable System Model continues to demonstrate its relevance across sectors, enabling organizations to navigate complexity with agility and purpose. Whether enhancing sustainability in eco-villages, streamlining operations in healthcare, driving innovation in businesses, or improving governance in public systems, the VSM provides a robust framework for adaptation and resilience. Its capacity to align diverse functions into a cohesive system ensures that organizations can effectively respond to dynamic challenges, making it a valuable tool for modern organizational success.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The growing issue of plastic waste pollution is having a severe impact on our environment, leading to annual generation of plastic waste in landfills, oceans, and natural areas. Urgent global action is needed to address this problem. According to <em>UN Environment Programme research (UNEP),</em> the amount of plastic waste generated is expected to lead to fewer fish by 2050 and will continue to have a detrimental effect on the environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite efforts to minimize plastic consumption, ten countries remain the top generators of plastic waste globally. These countries have a significant responsibility to address the ongoing plastic waste crisis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">United States of America</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plastic use in the United States has seen a significant increase over the past four decades. The country produces over <strong>42 million metric tonnes</strong> of plastic waste annually, with approximately <strong>130kg</strong> of rubbish generated per American. Unfortunately, the recycling rate for plastic waste is declining, leading to issues with mismanagement and inefficient waste disposal, contributing to up to <strong>2.2 million tonnes</strong> of plastic leaking into the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">India</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India is one of the world&#8217;s most significant contributors to plastic waste, generating about <strong>9.46 million tonnes</strong> annually. The country is experiencing a challenge with plastic waste management due to the lack of proper waste management infrastructure, leading to littered streets and overflowing landfills. The Indian government has introduced initiatives to tackle the issue, including the Plastic Waste Management Rules, with the goal of reducing single-use plastic and promoting proper waste management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">China</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China is the biggest producer of plastic, generating about <strong>60 million tonnes</strong> of plastic waste annually. Despite this, the country has taken steps to combat plastic waste pollution, including a ban on single-use plastics and a focus on the circular economy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the world&#8217;s fourth largest producer of plastic waste, Brazil generates about <strong>11.3 million tons</strong> annually, with only <strong>1.28%</strong> being recycled. This leads to a significant amount of plastic waste ending up in landfills or in the ocean, posing a severe threat to the environment and marine life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Japan</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Japan produces around <strong>9 million tons </strong>of plastic waste annually, with a recycling rate of <strong>19.9%</strong>. The country faces issues with disposable plastic waste and its impact on the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Indonesia</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indonesia generates approximately <strong>7.8 million tons</strong> of plastic waste annually, with a large portion going uncollected or being improperly managed. The government has launched programs to address this issue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Russia</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Russia&#8217;s plastic waste production is increasing, presenting significant challenges due to inadequate waste management systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Germany</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Germany generates approximately <strong>6.5 million tons</strong> of plastic waste annually, with only <strong>38% </strong>being recycled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">United Kingdom</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The United Kingdom contributes approximately <strong>6.4 million tonnes </strong>of plastic waste annually, despite efforts to reduce plastic waste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mexico</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mexico generates <strong>5.9 million tons</strong> of plastic waste annually, with only <strong>15%</strong> being recycled.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While these countries generate significant volumes of plastic waste, the way they deal with the waste varies depending on their economic status. However, the problem of plastic waste pollution demands collaborative and coordinated worldwide countermeasures.&#8217;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental Impact of Plastic Waste</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The adverse effects of plastic waste on the environment are far-reaching. Plastic waste pollution negatively impacts biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health. To combat this issue, it is important to prioritize the use of reusable materials over disposable ones. <strong><em>It is alarming to note that the global recycling rate for plastic waste is only 9%, indicating a need for increased recycling facility availability and the use of easily recyclable or biodegradable materials.</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How much fresh water does our planet have left? This crucial resource is in limited supply, with only 1% of the world&#8217;s water accessible for human consumption. Unfortunately, population growth and pollution are exacerbating water degradation in developing countries, posing threats to fisheries, agriculture, and public health. Additionally, climate change is intensifying droughts, further compounding the issue.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To put things into perspective, imagine that the entire world&#8217;s water supply could fit on a map of the United States. Even more staggering is the fact that the water we have represents just a fraction of the Earth&#8217;s total volume. The oceans, which seem vast, actually make up a relatively small portion. According to the US Geological Survey&#8217;s 2019 monograph titled &#8216;How much water is there on Earth,&#8217; the largest bubble representing all water on the planet would be about 1,385 kilometers in diameter. This includes water in the atmosphere, rivers, lakes, ice caps, glaciers, underground sources, and even within living organisms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of this total water volume, only a medium-sized sphere encompasses liquid freshwater, with a mere 1% available for human use. The majority of freshwater, about 99%, is found in groundwater and is largely inaccessible. Surface freshwater, such as lakes and rivers, is crucial for sustaining life and represents a small sphere with a volume of approximately 93,113 cubic kilometers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is important to note that 96.5% of all water on Earth is saline, leaving just 3.5% as fresh water. However, of this fresh water, about 60% exists as ice in the polar regions and glaciers, while another 30% is found underground. This means that only 1% of the total water supply is readily available for human consumption and sustaining ecosystems, as reported by respected organizations like the USGS and books like &#8216;Water in Crisis: A Guide to the World&#8217;s Fresh Water Resources&#8217; published in 1993.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The state of conservation for this vital resource has improved in developed countries, such as those in Europe. However, developing countries face worsening conditions due to urban population growth, increased material consumption, and untreated wastewater. Studies, including the UN Environment Programme&#8217;s 2016 report &#8216;A Snapshot of the World&#8217;s Water Quality: Towards a global assessment,&#8217; highlight the severe pollution affecting river stretches in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Fisheries, agriculture, and people&#8217;s health are at risk as a result.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Solutions for Sustainable Water Management</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We believe that the solution lies in managing our existing water resources more efficiently rather than solely relying on increased supply. We must promote the use of recycled water for non-human consumption purposes like industrial processes, irrigation, and street cleaning. Additionally, optimizing distribution networks to minimize losses and raising public awareness about responsible water usage are crucial steps.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Experts like Alberto Garrido, director of the Botin Foundation&#8217;s Water Observatory and professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, recommend implementing intelligent network and storage management systems. Increasing the efficiency of water usage in urban, industrial, agricultural, and livestock settings, as well as adopting desalination, wastewater treatment, and reuse practices, can contribute to resource sustainability. Coupling this with strategic management of groundwater resources and improving irrigation techniques can help mitigate water scarcity issues.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Agriculture&#8217;s Role in Water Conservation</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Agriculture, which accounts for about 70% of water consumption, plays a significant role in water management. Coordinating scarcity with adjustments in irrigation allocations, introducing crop rotation, and improving irrigation efficiency can reduce water usage. Measures to improve the ecological status of water bodies and the quality of groundwater are also important aspects of sustainable water management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Innovations in Mitigating the Water Crisis</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To address the ongoing water crisis, various innovations are emerging. For instance, fog collectors and nano-membrane toilets developed by Aqualonis and Cranfield University, respectively, offer unique solutions to mitigate water-related problems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cities worldwide are implementing sustainable urban drainage systems and embracing the idea of sponge cities. These initiatives, coupled with removing asphalt and creating space for land to absorb and retain water, contribute to greater resilience in the face of climate change, replenishing aquifers and reducing runoff.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The water crisis is not limited to developing countries. Latin America and the Caribbean, despite possessing a significant portion of the world&#8217;s water resources, face challenges in terms of urban and agricultural water stress and limited access to safe drinking water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Globally, approximately two billion people lack access to safe drinking water. The World Water Development Report released ahead of the UN 2023 Water Conference warns that at current rates, only 37% of sub-Saharan countries&#8217; population will have safe water by 2030. In the coming decades, the number of people living in water-stressed urban areas may reach between 1.7 and 2.4 billion if we do not take immediate action to address the impacts of climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme droughts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is vital to recognize that climate change is primarily a water crisis. As it worsens, we experience floods, rising sea levels, wildfires, and diminishing ice fields. The United Nations emphasizes the need to address the water crisis urgently. We must take collective action to ensure the sustainable management of this precious resource and secure a better future for all.</p>

One significant finding that deserves attention is the consensus among climate scientists that human-caused climate change is indeed real and ongoing. This overwhelming agreement has been backed by numerous studies published in esteemed scientific journals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>A Rapid Warming Trend Unexplained by Nature</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Throughout history, Earth&#8217;s climate has experienced natural fluctuations, including seven glacial advance and retreat cycles in the past 650,000 years. The end of the last ice age approximately 11,700 years ago marked the onset of the modern climate era, coinciding with the rise of human civilization. While most of these climate changes were attributed to minor variations in Earth&#8217;s orbit, the current warming trend seen in recent decades is too rapid to be explained by such natural factors. Additionally, it is more significant in magnitude than what can be attributed to solar activity. Key evidence supporting this argument can be found in ice cores from Greenland, Antarctica, and mountain glaciers, as well as in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and sedimentary rock layers. <strong>Collectively known as paleoclimate evidence, this data reveals that the current warming is occurring at a rate approximately ten times faster than the average warming rate during ice-age recoveries.</strong> Furthermore, carbon dioxide emissions from human activities are increasing at a rate over <strong>250 times faster</strong> than natural sources following the last ice age.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Observable evidence of rapid climate change further strengthens the case for human influence. These observations include global temperature rise, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, retreating glaciers, decreased snow cover, rising sea levels, declining arctic sea ice, extreme weather events, and ocean acidification. All these changes serve as clear indicators of the impact of human activities on the environment.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Greenhouse Effect: Trapping Earth&#8217;s Heat</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This warming trend that has been observed since the mid-20th century is attributed to the expansion of the &#8220;greenhouse effect.&#8221; This phenomenon occurs when certain gases in the atmosphere trap the heat radiating from Earth, preventing it from escaping into space. The heat-trapping nature of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, was initially demonstrated in the mid-19th century.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Fossil Fuels and the Surge in CO2 Levels</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil over the past century has significantly contributed to the concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. This occurs because the process of burning coal or oil combines carbon with oxygen in the air, resulting in the creation of carbon dioxide. As a result of these emissions, CO2 levels in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere have risen from 280 parts per million (ppm) to 414 ppm in the past 150 years. This measurement, represented in ppm, signifies the fraction of air composed of CO2 molecules. For example, one ppm of CO2 means that for every 1 million air molecules, one is CO2.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an organization comprising 195 member countries and thousands of scientific experts, released a <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/syr/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Synthesis Report</a> in March 2023 confirming the undeniable link between human activities and global warming. <strong>The prime drivers of these emissions are energy use, land use, and the production and consumption of goods.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Human activity has pushed the Earth beyond its limits in multiple ways, posing a threat to the societies we have built, according to a recent study. The research focuses on the &#8220;planetary boundaries,&#8221; which were first introduced in 2009 to outline the limits within which Earth&#8217;s environment can sustain human life. These boundaries were established based on the preindustrial era of the Holocene epoch, which lasted for approximately 10,000 years until the industrial revolution introduced the burning of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases. The study evaluates the potential consequences of exceeding these boundaries and emphasizes the need for corrective actions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Interconnected Factors Affecting Earth&#8217;s Habitability</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The planetary boundaries model considers various interconnected factors that affect Earth&#8217;s habitability. While carbon dioxide levels are included, factors like biodiversity loss, chemical pollution, land use changes, and nitrogen and phosphorus levels are also taken into account. It is important to note that these boundaries are not isolated from one another; changes in one area can have cascading effects on others. However, the challenge lies in explaining these complex interactions to the general public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Quantifying the Nine Planetary Boundaries</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The recent study is significant in that it quantifies all nine planetary boundaries, unlike previous research. This quantitative approach provides a clearer understanding of where we stand in relation to these boundaries. Despite some fine-tuning of the boundaries&#8217; details, the overall conclusion remains the same: we are living on a planet that is drastically different from what previous generations experienced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Concerning Findings and Urgent Climate Change Action</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The evaluation of the nine boundaries reveals several concerning findings. One of the most problematic areas is the release of phosphorus and nitrogen into the environment through widespread use in fertilizers, leading to detrimental algal blooms. Chemical pollution exceeds the calculated boundary limits. In terms of climate change, the analysis considers atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, which has reached 417 parts per million (ppm), surpassing the safe limit of 350 ppm set in 1987. The study also explores radiative forcing, which indicates an imbalance in energy on the planet. Both carbon dioxide levels and radiative forcing are beyond the recommended boundaries, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While climate change usually dominates discussions on Earth&#8217;s future, the study emphasizes the equal importance of maintaining the integrity of living ecosystems. It examines genetic diversity and functional integrity as factors related to biosphere integrity, finding that the current extinction rate is approximately 100 times the background rate. Human activities have also significantly altered primary production, with 30 percent now used for human purposes compared to the preindustrial level of 2 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Assessing Planetary Boundaries</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The presence of artificial chemicals, such as plastics and PFASs, exceeds the safe boundary. Forest loss has reduced the once forested land by 40 percent, while the safe limit is considered at 25 percent due to forests&#8217; role in regulating the climate. The assessment of freshwater use now includes both surface and accessible water, highlighting the incorrect side of the boundary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On a positive note, three categories have not exceeded their boundaries: ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosol loading, and ozone depletion (where progress has been made through international agreements).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The concept of planetary boundaries is seen as a valuable tool to gauge the impact of human activities on the Earth. It offers a simplified way of understanding the resources we consume. However, some argue that more action is needed to address the complexity of the challenges we face. Moving from identifying problems to implementing solutions is crucial. Scientists and policymakers must collaborate to develop attractive and useful solutions that appeal to a wider audience, promoting sustainable practices for the benefit of all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reported that 2023 is the worst year on record for billion-dollar climate disasters in the United States. This alarming information highlights the urgent need for action to address human-driven climate change and prevent the further intensification and frequency of extreme events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2023&#8217;s Billion-Dollar Climate Disasters</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the NOAA report, there have already been <strong>23 weather or climate disasters in 2023</strong> that caused at least $1 billion in estimated damages. With four months remaining in the year and the damages from recent disasters still being calculated, this number has already surpassed the record of 22 billion-dollar disasters in 2020. The list of disasters includes two flooding events, 18 severe weather events, one winter storm event, one wildfire event, and one tropical cyclone. It encompasses events such as the devastating wildfires in Maui, Hurricane Idalia hitting Florida, and a severe hailstorm in Minnesota. Tragically, these events resulted in 253 fatalities and costs exceeding $57.6 billion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Growing List of Disasters</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is important to note that the number of billion-dollar climate disasters is expected to increase further in 2023. The NOAA report identifies two recent events, Tropical Storm Hilary and drought conditions across the Midwest, as potential additions to this year&#8217;s list once final calculations are completed. These events have brought record-breaking rainfall, flooding, and agricultural challenges due to lack of rain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Human Activity and Climate Change</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The underlying cause of these extreme events is human activity and climate change. Numerous studies have consistently demonstrated the link between human activity and global warming. If immediate and drastic action is not taken to reduce emissions and pollutants or remove them from the atmosphere, experts warn that extreme events like storms, heat waves, cold snaps, flooding, and wildfires will continue to rise in frequency and severity. This has significant economic and human consequences, with the world&#8217;s poorest communities being disproportionately affected, despite contributing the least to the crisis.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While climate change undoubtedly plays a significant role in the increasing severity and frequency of these billion-dollar disasters, other factors also contribute to their impact. The location and construction of settlements and infrastructure, as well as the value of assets at risk, can amplify the consequences of these events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A History of Costly Disasters</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is staggering to consider that there have been<strong> </strong>371 weather and climate events in the United States since 1980 where<strong> </strong>damages or costs exceeded $1 billion when adjusted for inflation, <strong>totaling more than $2.615 trillion</strong>. These figures highlight the immense financial toll of climate disasters in the US and around the world.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Urgent and substantial action is necessary to address climate change and mitigate the growing risks posed by billion-dollar climate disasters. By taking proactive measures to reduce emissions, protect vulnerable communities, and adapt infrastructure, we can work towards a more resilient and sustainable future.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Step aside martinis, margaritas are taking the spotlight in bars. Tequila and mezcal, agave-based liquors, have emerged as the fastest-growing spirits category of 2022, along with ranch waters, Palomas, and reposado old fashioneds. These beverages are projected to surpass vodka as the highest-selling liquor in the United States this year, having already overtaken whiskey, which now holds the third position.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental Implications of Agave-Based Liquors</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While this trend celebrates Mexican heritage during Cinco de Mayo, it poses environmental challenges. Tequila offers a unique blend of flavor and versatility, suitable for both cocktails and sipping. However, its production has a greater environmental impact. According to Mexican law, tequila must be made from blue agave plants cultivated in five specific Mexican states. Mezcal includes additional states and agave varieties. Consequently, these Mexican spirits must be transported over long distances to reach their final destinations. The rising global popularity of tequila has also led to a reduction in genetic diversity, as manufacturers favor high-yielding monocrops that require more pesticides. In contrast, vodka can be produced from a variety of grains, sugar beets, and potatoes, with no geographical limitations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tequila vs. Vodka: Environmental Contrasts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To create tequila and mezcal, producers harvest the entire mature agave plant, typically aged between seven and twelve years. The plant&#8217;s sword-like leaves are removed, and the heart, known as the pina, is steamed or roasted to extract a sugar-rich nectar. This nectar is then fermented and distilled. This production process generates significant waste, with approximately 5 kg (or 11 lbs.) of pulp and 10-15 liters of vinasse (an acidic liquid) produced for every liter of tequila. Incorrect disposal of this vinasse can contaminate soil and water supplies, leading to ecological dead zones. Vodka production, on the other hand, produces less waste relative to its final product, resulting in a lower environmental impact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Climate Change Vulnerability</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tequila&#8217;s agave plants face greater vulnerability to climate change compared to those used in vodka production due to their limited growth regions in Mexico. Rising temperatures disrupt weather patterns in these areas and pose a threat to the Mexican long-nosed bat, a vital pollinator of blue agave plants. A study published in Nature in 2019 suggests that within 50 years, up to 75% of bat ranges could overlap with agave areas, spelling disaster for the industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Regarding emissions, both tequila and vodka production emit approximately 3 kg CO2 per liter. However, a new vodka brand called Air claims to remove 1 pound of CO2 per bottle by distilling spirits from water and capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This makes Air vodka potentially carbon negative. Therefore, choosing vodka over tequila might help preserve margaritas and protect bat populations.</p>

This promising forecast comes from a recent study conducted by the renowned independent research firm Rystad Energy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Spain&#8217;s Commitment to Renewable Energy</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The progress Spain has made in renewable energy can be attributed to its steadfast commitment and long-term investments in solar and wind capacity over the past decade. Presently, these renewable sources contribute 20% and 10%, respectively, to the country&#8217;s overall power generation. The nation&#8217;s strategic focus on clean energy has not only allowed it to gain significant momentum but also positioned it at the forefront of global renewable energy transition.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fabian Ronningen, a senior analyst specializing in renewables and power at Rystad Energy, lauded Spain&#8217;s achievements, emphasizing that they come as no surprise considering the country&#8217;s history of strategic investments and early adoption of renewable energy technologies. Ronningen also believes that Spain&#8217;s progress serves as a shining example and benchmark for other nations, highlighting the attainability of a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rystad Energy report goes even further, predicting remarkable growth prospects for Spain in the field of solar and wind energy in the coming years. The nation&#8217;s unwavering commitment to renewable energy has created a fertile environment for the continued expansion and innovation of these sectors, cementing Spain&#8217;s role as a leader in the global renewable energy landscape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reduction in Consumer Prices</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aside from the obvious environmental benefits, Spain&#8217;s success in renewable energy has yielded another significant outcome—a reduction in consumer prices. This achievement is particularly noteworthy, considering the exceptionally high power prices experienced in 2022. In comparison to France, Spain boasts average power prices that are 34% lower. This stark difference can be attributed to a range of factors, including Spain&#8217;s transition from being one of Europe&#8217;s highest-priced spot markets to one of its lowest. This shift has not only benefited consumers but has also reinforced Spain&#8217;s position as an attractive destination for investors in the renewable energy sector.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>New York City is sinking: </strong>The extraordinary weight of its towering buildings is only making matters worse. According to new research, the Big Apple is sinking by an average of <strong>1-2mm</strong> each year. Some areas are sinking at twice this rate. This subsidence is compounded by sea level rise which is happening at around twice the global average due to the melting of glaciers and thermal expansion of seawater caused by global heating. As a result, the water that surrounds New York City has risen by <strong>22cm</strong> since 1950. The major flooding events are expected to become four times more frequent than they are now by the end of the century.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The study, published in Earth’s Future journal, states that <strong>8.4 million</strong> people in New York City are facing varying degrees of hazard from inundation. The authors of the study also point out that this problem will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as climate change continues to worsen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Weight of New York City&#8217;s Built Infrastructure</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sheer weight of New York City’s built infrastructure &#8211; which includes iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building &#8211; is exacerbating this issue even further. These structures together weigh a staggering 1.68tn lbs. This is equivalent to <strong>140 million elephants</strong>! This immense weight is pushing down on a variety of materials found in NYC’s ground. This includes schist bedrock and a mix of sands and clays that were built over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Effects of Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Ida</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tom Parsons is a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey and lead researcher on this study. He pointed out that while this isn’t something to panic about immediately, it does increase risks from flooding. He added:<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>“It wasn’t a mistake to build such large buildings in New York but we’ve just got to keep in mind every time you build something there you push down the ground a little bit more.”</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This statement was proven true when Hurricane Sandy hit New York in 2012. Flooding parts of the subway system and resulting in power blackouts across the city. In 2021, Hurricane Ida flooded parts of New York again and caused several drownings. Both events were made worse by climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Planning for Future Flooding Risks</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Parsons went on to say that coastal cities like New York must start planning for these issues now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>“If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilize buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people too, which is probably the greatest concern.&#8221;</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New York City&#8217;s extraordinary skyline may be iconic but it&#8217;s also contributing to an ever-increasing risk posed by flooding. Thanks to the rising seas caused by global heating and subsidence from its own immense weight. With major flooding events expected to become four times more frequent than they are now by 2100, coastal cities must start planning for these issues now if they are to safeguard their citizens from harm.</p>
