What Personal Data We Collect and Why

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, plus the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, to help with spam detection. An anonymised string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar service’s privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact Forms

If you contact us through a form on this site, the information you submit (such as name, email address and message) is sent to our editorial team and stored in order to respond to your enquiry. We do not use this data for any other purpose.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address for the purpose of sending you updates, using a double opt-in process. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in every newsletter email.

Polls

Where this site offers reader polls, we record your vote together with a hashed identifier (such as your IP address) solely to prevent duplicate voting on the same poll.

Media

If you upload images to the website, please avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, as visitors can download and extract location data from images on the website.

Cookies & Consent

Like most websites, we use cookies. How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so we can recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. Newsletter subscriber data is kept until you unsubscribe. Contact form submissions are kept only as long as needed to handle the enquiry.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Depending on the features in use on the site, data may be shared with processors such as Google (Tag Manager/Analytics/consent management), Automattic/Gravatar (comment avatars), our email newsletter provider, and our hosting provider, each acting under their own privacy policy and, where required, a data processing agreement with us.

Your Rights Over Your Data

Under the GDPR, you have the right to request access to, rectification or erasure of your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, and to request a copy of the data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority – in Estonia, the Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate (Andmekaitse Inspektsioon, www.aki.ee) – or with the data protection authority in your own EU member state.
